Parliamentary questions (PQ's) are tools that can be used by Members of Parliament to seek information or press for action. MPs can ask the Government questions to be answered in person by a Minister (Oral Questions) or in writing (Written Questions). They oblige Ministers to explain and defend the work, policy decisions and actions of their departments.
All questions, whether transcribed from the Chamber or recorded from a printed format, are recorded in The Official Report (Hansard) and so they are widely available and accessible.
There are four categories of question in the House of Commons:
- Questions for Oral Answer (Oral Questions or OPQs)
- Urgent Questions
- Cross-cutting questions
- Questions for Written Answer (Written Questions or WPQs)
Of the 40,000 or so questions asked each year, only about 3,000 are oral questions answered by a Minister in the Chamber. A factsheet on PQ's can be downloaded in PDF format from the Parliament website .
